The Capital District Megaband is a community contra dance band based in Upstate New York associated with the DanceFlurry Organization.
The Capital District Megaband was first assembled in 2010 based loosely on the Portland Megaband idea by Susan Songer. The band consists of local amateur musicians interested in playing dance music for dancers.
Participating musicians are from all over Capital region as far as Utica, Northville, Queensbury, and Brant Lake. Besides the fiddle, guitar, banjo and mandolin, the band includes musicians playing flute, tuba, uilleann bagpipes, and concertina.
Directors / conductors George Wilson and David Kaynor work with the group to focus on building repertoire and developing the nuances and groove necessary for good dance music.
Amateur level players and higher are welcome. Participants are expected to prepare the dance sets at dance tempo for the first rehearsal. The goal of the Megaband is to provide an opportunity for musicians to play in a dance band setting. There are no individual instrument lessons.
